If dental visits make you anxious, you are far from alone. Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people delay or avoid treatment — and the longer they wait, the more complicated things can become.
Nitrous oxide, known clinically as relative analgesia (RA) and commonly called laughing gas, is a simple, safe, and effective option that makes dental appointments much more manageable for most people who try it. It is not a general anaesthetic — you remain fully awake and in control throughout — but for the majority of patients it takes the edge off enough to get through treatment comfortably.
How it works
A small, soft nosepiece delivers a gentle mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which you breathe normally throughout your appointment. Within a few minutes most people notice a pleasant, relaxed sensation. You stay conscious and can talk to us at any point. When the appointment ends, the gas clears within two to three minutes.
Common sensations include:
- A mild tingling in the fingers and toes
- A feeling of warmth or heaviness in the arms and legs
- A sense of calm distance — sounds may feel further away
- A reduced sense of worry or care about what is happening
Clinically, nitrous oxide reduces or eliminates the gag reflex and decreases awareness of procedures like injections, making it much easier to complete treatment without anxiety or distress.
Is it right for you?
Nitrous oxide works well for most people, but around one in five patients find it has little or no effect — this is normal and not a reflection of anything you have done. If you fall into that group, we can discuss other options including IV sedation, which provides a deeper level of sedation for more complex needs.
For shorter procedures in particular, nitrous oxide is a convenient alternative to IV sedation: no fasting, no IV line, and you can leave the practice within ten minutes of finishing and return to work or normal activities shortly after.
What to expect at your first appointment
We always start with a trial session before any treatment. You will have a chance to talk through the process with the dentist, try the gas, and see how it feels — no commitment, no pressure. If it works well for you, we book in your treatment from there.
