New Patient Consultation & Examination

At Art of Dentistry, we look after families from every walk of life. Whatever your background or budget, you’ll get the same standard of care and the same friendly welcome.

Quick, but thorough

We know your time matters, so your first visit is generally booked in for 20 to 30 minutes. In that time, your dentist will still carry out a complete check, looking at:
  • Your teeth and how they bite together
  • Any existing restorations — fillings, crowns, veneers, and similar work
  • The health of your gums and the bone supporting your teeth
  • Your tongue, throat, cheeks, and lips, checking for signs of oral cancer
  • Your jaw joint
It’s a focused appointment rather than a long one — everything you need, without the wait.

X-rays and imaging

We’ll take X-rays as needed to check for decay, abscesses or cysts, root position, and bone loss. We now also recommend a full mouth X-ray (OPG) every five years as part of routine care. It gives us a complete picture of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures in one image, so we can pick up on anything developing early, even before it causes symptoms.

For more detailed cases, we also have 3D X-ray (CBCT) imaging on site, so further investigation can happen here rather than through an outside referral.

Working with our hygiene team

We have a dedicated hygiene department on site, and where it’s the right fit, your dentist may recommend seeing them as part of your care — for example, if you have recurring decay, a build-up of calculus, or signs of gum disease. Our dentists and hygienists work closely together, so any findings from your exam are shared directly with the hygiene team, keeping your care joined up rather than treated as separate visits.

After your exam

Once your check-up is done, your dentist will talk you through anything found and the options to address it. If treatment is needed, you’ll get a clear plan with costs upfront, so you know exactly what’s involved before you decide.

Periodic Examination

The best way to maintain good oral hygiene is to brush your teeth and use inter-dental brushes daily as well as visiting your Dentist for regular check ups. Your dentist not only examines your teeth for signs of decay or damage, he also looks for early signs of gum disease and oral cancer, although this is very rare.

It is normally recommended that you visit your dentist at least once a year, although people who have severe gum disease or a weakened immune system may need to visit the dentist more often.

Your dentist will first ask if there have been any problems since your last dental check up and take a note of any new medication that you may be taking.

X-rays of your teeth are usually taken every 12 months, unless your dentist is satisfied on clinical examination that a radiograph is not necessary.

If cavities are found or your Dental Surgeon feels that your oral hygiene needs to be improved, he will create a treatment plan outlining the work to be carried out and provide you with a cost estimate of the proposed treatment.

Occasionally, patients are referred to other Surgeons who specialise in the relevant fields of Dentistry.
